No project in the forty year history of the Company has thrown up more challenges than the cladding contract for Weston-super-Mare Grand Pier.
The position of the main building, over 100 metres out to sea at the end of the pier, brought with it unique logistical and access issues that saw us having to rip up the text book and improvise; cranes needed to deliver and position the side cladding had to be floated on barges, and the standing seam roof sheets had to be rolled at ground level and handballed up a scaffolding ramp that the pyramid builders of old would have been proud of!
As if that wasn’t enough, the contract coincided with the coldest winter the UK has known in 309 years, dubbed “The Big Freeze” by the British media. Meticulous planning, and a healthy dose of Yorkshire grit and determination prevailed in the end, and despite inevitable delays due to the weather, the project was completed to the satisfaction of all.
On what was a very challenging project for all involved, YSIS displayed an ingenuity, tenacity and level of professionalism for which they should be commended
